What is an EKG Technician? What Do They Do?
Electrocardiograph or EKG Technicians are trained medical practitioners and are responsible for administering an EKG test and analyzing the results to determine the cardiovascular health of their patients. Most EKG Technicians work in hospitals and cardiac centers, but some choose to work in private practices as well.
What Does an EKG Technician Do?
EKG Technicians have a wide range of responsibilities. Their primary duties include performing diagnostic tests, monitor blood pressure, and collecting medical data to be used by doctors and other healthcare staff. EKG Technicians perform cardiovascular tests on patients in order to identify and diagnose any heart conditions present in the patient.
During the test procedure, EKG Technicians talk to the patients and keep them informed about every step of the procedure as it happens. They are also responsible for ensuring the safety of patients during the EKG test and making sure that the patient remains comfortable and relaxed throughout the procedure in order to gain an accurate reading. They monitor their patient’s blood pressure as well as the EKG equipment to ensure it is running effectively, accurately, and without malfunctions. They also position patients properly according to the EKG requirements.
EKG Technicians work alongside nurses and doctors and maintain high safety and ethical standards at all times. They are also responsible for the setup of EKG equipment, components, and tracings to ensure accurate and precise readings.
How To Become an EKG Technician
EKG Technicians don’t usually need to have a college or university degree per se, but many employers prefer applicants with previous experience in the medical industry. Positions such as EMTs, paramedics, and nurses are looked upon favorably. So, you may want to get a degree in nursing or a related healthcare field first and foremost.
After you’ve completed your degree, you need to gain valuable experience in the healthcare fields. Again, a paramedic or nurse is a good choice in order to gain relevant experience for becoming an EKG Technician.
Next, you’ll gain on-the-job training which is the primary path to becoming an EKG Technician. This training generally takes between four and six weeks to complete and is conducted under the guidance and supervision of an EKG Supervisor or a cardiologist.
Finally, you’ll need to get certified as an EKG Technician. The certification is only available to those with the required experience or education, which is why it is the last step. To get the Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT) credentials, you’ll need to prepare for and pass the CCT exam offered by the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians.
