A speech pathologist ("speech-language pathologist" or "SLP's") assists patients who have disabilities or have experienced traumatic life events that have left them with speech or voice disorders or impairments. The speech pathologist also assists patients who are struggling to use their throat or swallowing. The speech pathologist both treats patients and develops therapy plans to suit the individualized needs of the patients.

Our clinical practice is seeking an experienced speech pathologist to join our team of therapists to assist patients who suffer from speech sound issues, social communication issues, cognitive-communication issues, and other disorders relating to speech and language. The speech pathologist will provide the patient with optimal care and support with regard to speech issues (a speech problem) and language issues. Providing both assessments and treatment plans to the patient.
Speech Pathologist Duties and Responsibilities
Sample job duties and speech pathologist responsibilities include:
- Assist patients with “speech sounds”— how we say sounds and put sounds together into words.
- Assist patients with understanding language and learning to hear, read, and use words.
- Assist patients with social communication, like how we follow rules and taking turns.
- Provide support to those who suffer from stuttering or fluency issues.
- Provide cognitive-communication assistance, involving memory, attention, problem-solving, organization, and other thinking skills.
- Treat patients with communication disorders or language disorders and use speech therapy to provide a treatment plan.
- Treat patients with a swallowing disorder. The process of sucking, chewing, and swallowing food or liquid. Also referred to as dysphagia.
- Work closely with a physical therapist, occupational therapist, audiologist, social worker, and other doctors or therapists on providing speech pathology services and treatment plans for those suffering from speech disorders.
Speech Pathologist Requirements
Qualified candidates should have the following:
- Must have Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP)
- Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Speech-language Pathology or Communication Sciences.
- Previous experience at a private practice, clinical practice, or other health care practice is a plus.
- Key communication skills.
- Previous clinical experience is preferred. Supervised clinical experience is okay.
Speech Language Pathologist Training, Certifications, and Degree's
Speech-language pathologists typically need at least a master’s degree. Although master’s programs do not require a particular undergraduate degree for admission, certain courses must be taken before entering a program. Required courses vary by institution.
Speech-language pathologists can earn the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP), offered by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Certification typically satisfies some or all of the requirements for state licensure and may be required by some employers. To earn CCC-SLP certification, candidates must graduate from an accredited program, pass an exam, and complete a fellowship under the supervision of a certified speech-language pathologist. To maintain the CCC-SLP credential, speech-language pathologists must complete 30 hours of continuing education every 3 years.
