Buyer Resume Example

buyer resume example

Buyer resumes should reference as many prior retail experiences as possible. Especially retail experience surrounds managing inventory, purchasing or selecting product for retail establishments, and generally being able to predict upcoming trends. As a Buyer, you will be tasked with recognizing trends at least two years in advance. Showing your ability to perform consumer research and build reports or presentations that predict trends will be applicable to mention in your resume, cover letter, and resume objective.

If you have previous Buyer experience, you should absolutely lean into that when speaking about your prior work. Use accomplishments in the workplace that pertain to your previous buying experience. For example, maybe you predicted an upcoming trend with hoodies and had anticipated the types of hoodies the company should order at least two seasons in advance. If this led to success for the business, reiterate your methods for doing this and what it achieved for the business.

Soft Skills for Buyer Resumes

Soft skills are talents that are intangible. They are often described as personal characteristics. But in the setting of the workplace, these characteristics are developed through prior work knowledge. For example, having customer service skills.

Soft skills that Buyers should focus on would be qualitative and quantitative research. The ability to predict upcoming trends can be directly related to having great taste and being able to see opportunities before they reach critical mass. Research and reporting skills are very important to mention as they take up a large portion of the daily activities of a buyer.

Soft skills that all Buyers should have are:

Buyer Resume Objective

Starting your resume with a resume objective is one of the best ways to encapsulate your previous work history in a short statement. This allows your future employer and the resume reader to more quickly scan your resume and comprehend your work history in a short amount of time.

A resume objective for a Buyer should contain references to previous buyer experience or references to your experience in the fashion and merchandising industry. If you lack experience as a buyer, you may want to reference any retail fashion experience or ability to predict upcoming trends using research or data. Additionally, any university-level projects you completed while attending school for merchandising or fashion may be applicable to mention as well.

Here is an example of a Buyer resume objective that you can place beneath your contact information but before your previous work experience section.

Previous buying experience. I started my career as an assistant buyer to our senior buyer. Worked within multiple verticals and industries. Started in consumer, moved into B2B. Comfortable measuring markets, performing market research and ensuring our buying is projected to create revenue.

Buyer Duties & Responsibilities For Your Resume

When listing previous work experiences, you might not be able to recall all of the duties that you performed while on the job. This may happen when your previous work experience as a Buyer was a few months ago or a few years ago.

Here are the general duties and responsibilities that you can list as part of the bullet points under each of your previous work experiences as a Buyer.
