Layoffs are more common and happen when the employer can’t sustain the cost of keeping the employee on the payroll. In this instance, your employee will be able to file for unemployment.
Ways you can help your employee after the layoff:
- Be a sounding board for them. Help by being available to talk and lend a therapeutic ear.
- Be a resource for networking. Introduce them to friends, find a way to help them find employment.
- Be a resource for unemployment help. If they have difficulty filing for unemployment, help them with that.
- Write a letter of recommendation. This can be helpful for the employee’s new job search. Write a well-written recommendation letter.
