FBI Dress Code (2022 Complete Guide)

What's the FBI dress code? The Federal Bureau of Investigation, generally abbreviated as the FBI, is the United States of America's national intelligence and security service. It is America's major central law enforcement agency. They are supervised by the US Department of Justice and are part of the US Intelligence Community. Both the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence report directly to it.

As a leader in intelligence collecting and investigation, the FBI maintains supervision over violations of many categories of federal crimes.

FBI dress code

Undercover work necessitates blending into the target community and its function. While FBI agents are required to wear suits and ties most of the time, this is not always the case. When they apprehend criminals or perform surveillance, we see them dressed casually. When conducting raids, they may wear deep blue synthetic coats with visible yellow embroidery of the alphabets 'F,' 'B,' and 'I.' Or when engaging with various law enforcement authorities.

They must wear neutral business clothing and a ball hat during firearms instruction. In basic terms, they want a comfortable training regimen for both the upper and lower bodies.

FBI principles

It is not easy to be the primary law enforcement agency in the United States. Under any circumstances, the FBI must adhere to specific priorities. They are as follows:

  • To prevent the invasion of the United States of America
  • To protect the United States of America from foreign intelligence, surveillance, and cyberattacks
  • To combat significant cyber criminal activities
  • To fight corruption at all levels of government
  • To protect civil liberties
  • To combat multinational criminal enterprises
  • To combat egregious executive offenses
  • To combat important violent crimes

FBI Dress Code

FBI agents' dress code varies according to their job profile, taking into account local conditions, traditions, and demands.

They typically wear suits 5% of the time. If the agents must be present on court grounds, they will generally get dressed in a suit. Executives at the FBI are typically dressed in suits, but exceptions do arise.

Street agents dress in everyday clothing to blend in with the general public. In any case, officers investigating white-collar offenses usually dress professionally.

While agents overseeing cybercrime and counter-intelligence appear in business casual clothing. Agents assigned to gangs and drug-related enterprises dress more informally, generally in jeans and T-shirts.

Agents who conduct early morning searches or arrests dress smartly in athletic shirts and tactical pants.

SWAT squad members are primarily tactical in their outlook. FBI agents must qualify four times a year with their government-issued firearm. It is customary for this practice to get undertaken in slightly more modest tactical attire, such as protective tactical pants, athletic shirts, and ball caps.

The primary objective is to offer a professional image and represent the agency. They should avoid overdressing, which impairs the agents' capacity to engage with the environment and populace. This becomes critical during surveillance searches, as they cannot afford to jeopardize their capacity to undertake essential activities.

Grooming habits in the FBI

Tattoos are listed as a distraction to others under the FBI's guidelines if they are not covered correctly. The 50th page of the 2017 edition of the "Special Agent Candidate Information Packet" notes explicitly that tattoos (s) are distracting in the training environment. Under the polo shirts, an agent must cover them with suitably colored long sleeves or long sleeve shirts.

If the wearer does not wish to wear a full shirt underneath the polo shirt, full-arm sleeves are also suitable. They even come in a variety of colors that mimic natural skin tones.

During training sessions/periods, a traditional appearance discourages distractions while emphasizing unity, cooperation, and order. This is according to FBI publications.

In addition to tattoo advice, the Information Packet discusses the conventional aesthetic. It consists of the following:

  • If worn by ladies (men are not permitted to have piercings), earrings must be modest, unadorned, and secure (not drooping or a design that could get tangled with something or someone).
  • Other facial piercings are not permitted.
  • Hair – should be of a reasonable length with no extreme styles or colors.
  • Hair on men should be kept to the base of the collar. Additionally, they should refrain from wearing buns, ponytails, and braids, among other styles.
  • Men should shave their faces cleanly and have no facial hair.

The Firearms Issued

After qualifying, they issue a full-size Glock 22 or a small Glock 23 semi-automatic weapon to an FBI special agent. Both guns are chambered in.40 S&W. The FBI officially approved the Glock pistol chambered in.40 S&W cartridges for use by common agents in 1997. In the current scenario, the allocated sidearm is the Glock 23 "FG&R" (finger groove and rail; either "Gen3" or "Gen4"). The Glock 26 (subcompact 9mm Parabellum), Glock 23 (compact.40 S&W), and Glock 27 (subcompact.40 S&W) have gotten approved as secondary weapons. Special agents may also acquire and equip themselves with Glock 21 pistols chambered in.45 ACP. Special agents assigned to the FBI Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) and regional SWAT squads carry the Springfield Armory Professional Model 1911 pistol chambered in.45 ACP. In 2016, the FBI awarded Glock a contract to manufacture the latest firearms. They are more accurately chambered for 9mm Parabellum than the issued.40 S&W Glock handguns.

Transportation

Some FBI agents ride in black SUVs, while others get assigned to blue sedans. That is not to say that those are the only vehicles supplied to FBI staff. Their allotted automobiles range from grey Jeeps and brown pickup trucks to brown coupes and convertibles. The car assigned by the agency is mostly determined by the nature of the job profile, the prevailing meteorological conditions, and the region's geography. While black looks to be a prevalent hue throughout the fleet, it should not be confused with the lone color.
