Best 24 Hours Notice Resignation Letter Example (+ Free Template) [2022]

A 24-hour notice resignation letter is a formal resignation letter informing an employer of resignation with limited availability to transition job duties and responsibilities to a new employee or colleague. The employee is informing the employer that their resignation or end employment date will need to be 24 hours from submitting the resignation letter.

Before an employee resigns with a 24-hour notice, they should heavily consider the repercussions of the action they’re about to take. For the employer, this creates considerable inconvenience as there’s little to no time to train a replacement. For the future job seeker and employee, this creates a previous employment scenario where the employer will be unlikely to recommend the employee or be a positive reference for a new job.

Always speak to a supervisor, manager, or boss about the impending 24-hour resignation before writing the resignation letter and submitting it to human resources. Employees should inform the manager about the resignation and apologize for the inconvenience while creating a transition plan that may only be 24 hours in length.

Under these circumstances, the employer may ask for reasons for the 24-hour resignation. Good reasons would include:

  • Family health issues
  • Personal health issues
  • Personal reasons
  • A short notice relocation

Dear John —

Please accept this letter as my formal resignation. I sincerely apologize for the 24 hours notice on this resignation and realize this will cause some distress to my team and the company. If this were not necessary, I would not be resigning in this fashion as a sign of respect for the job and company.

As discussed, my final day of employment will be tomorrow, at the end of the workday at 5 pm, on May 26th, 2019.

Thank you so much for this opportunity.
Richard
