Best Retail Resignation Letter Sample (Retail Associate/Retail Worker)

A retail resignation letter isn’t dissimilar from any other type of resignation letter. Key differences in this type of resignation are allowing the store manager, department manager, or regional manager ample time to train a colleague or new hire to learn the job duties and job responsibilities that are being resigned from.

Before writing a retail resignation letter, it’s important to meet with a supervisor and provide verbal notice of the resignation. This acts as a “formal notice” of the resignation. In this meeting, the retail worker will inform the impending resignation manager and determine the appropriate next steps to transition out of the job duties and responsibilities. This includes writing a formal resignation letter, which may be sent to corporate, human resources (HR department), or other departments.

A notice period of two weeks is common for those in a retail job. This allows the manager to transition the job duties to another colleague. During this time, it is called the transition period. And the retail worker should assist the manager or “boss” with transferring duties to another retail associate.

Avoid providing a short notice or “no notice” to the manager. This would cause considerable stress on the employee and may make it difficult to resign from the current employer on “good terms.”

It can be helpful to have a good reason for resigning. When providing formal notification of resignation, a manager may interpret the reason for resigning as poor management. Good reasons for resigning include a personal reason or deciding to advance a career (moving onto a new job opportunity).

It’s important to put this reason for resigning in the resignation letter so that the employer understands that the employee is leaving the company on “good terms” and is satisfied with the work and employment opportunity. A manager may decide to conduct an “exit interview” on the last day of employment. This is an opportunity for the retail worker to provide feedback to the manager about the job title and overall company.

Dear Sarah —

I’m sad to be leaving this great company. Before I begin my resignation letter, I want to write that we have agreed to a two-week notice period and transition period starting today, the date of this letter. I look forward to helping the new retail associate grow into this position and advance themselves much as I have.

This opportunity is one that will always stay on my resume. It will help me throughout my career, mostly because I could be involved in all parts of the retail business and decision-making process. And that’s something I will truly cherish. I will take my education in the retail industry and apply it to a new job in my professional career. I’m sad to be leaving my current job and will miss all of my colleagues dearly.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help with the transition. Please accept this letter as my formal resignation notice.

Sincerely,
John
