Best Immediate Resignation or "No Notice" Letter Sample (+ Free Template)
Resigning from employment under immediate notice is a difficult scenario to navigate for employees. An immediate resignation letter is submitted after speaking with a manager, supervisor, or boss regarding the need to resign immediately. Immediate resignation is when an employee decides that their final date of employment is the day of the letter's receipt or the day after the receipt of the letter.
Often confused with a constructive dismissal, an immediate resignation is voluntary on behalf of the employee. And a constructive dismissal is when the employee is forced to resign under hostile work conditions. Employees should firmly understand this difference as a constructive dismissal is only when an employer discloses communication like the following, “I’m going to make your life here so terrible that you’ll want to leave this job.”
Tip: If you have an employment contract with the company, as an executive staff member, you may not be able to resign immediately. You should review your contract before submitting your formal resignation and formal resignation letter to understand better the commitment you made to your current employer before you communicate or transition to your new job.
An immediate resignation often loses the professional resigning process for the employer. For example, the employee will most likely forfeit an exit interview or any “good terms” they may have with the employer while submitting an immediate resignation. A sudden resignation often leaves the employer in a position to replace the employee’s duties rather quickly. And a transition period or notice period is generally not provided. A notice period would allow the employer ample time to replace the employee's job duties and responsibilities.
Tip: If you feel you are being forced to resign and it constitutes an unfair dismissal, you should speak with an attorney within your state that handles employment law.
employees must discuss the immediate resignation with their supervisor before deciding to write and submit their resignation letter for their current position. This provides the supervisor with short notice but enough time to communicate with the human resources department about the employment relationship.
Once the employee has spoken with the supervisor, informed them of the impending resignation on short notice, the verbal resignation process is complete, and the employee should write a formal letter and submit their formal notification.
Employees should expect their final pay to be altered as well. Since they may have completed their two week pay period, their pay may be altered.
Tip: It is not uncommon for employees to resign immediately when they are under disciplinary action on behalf of the company or management team. Often during a disciplinary hearing or other review board process, employees decide it is better to resign immediately.
Reasons for Resigning Immediately
For employees who desire to resign immediately. It is best to keep the reason short and generic. For example, the following reasons would be deemed as “good reason” for resigning under immediate circumstances:
- An unforeseen circumstance.
- A personal reason or personal reasons.
- Family health issues or other health-related issues.
Resignation Letter Format
When resigning immediately, keep the resignation letter terse and professional. The employee’s resignation should come as no surprise to the supervisor since the employee has already spoken to them. Write a professional resignation letter using business letter format and formal writing style.
